When I was seven years old, I remember hearing from the news that Princess Diana just died. I was too young back then to recognize her, and I just dismissed the event as another tragic celebrity accident. However, I realized that she wasn’t just an ordinary celebrity, she was a PHENOMENON. Judging from the flowers that flooded the gates of Buckingham and Kensington Palace, she had created a huge impact in the lives of many. It felt like the Queen has died because every nation across the globe was devastated by her death. Even the members of our household grieved at her loss. My aunt bought all almost all these magazines that featured her life and even waited in line when her memoir was released in the local bookstore.
I learned eventually that she was a different kind of monarch when I asked my aunt why people are calling her “The People’s Princess”. Unlike the other members of the House of Windsor, she explored the world outside of the palace gates and reached out to the people. During that time, I wasn’t aware that there are still existing monarchs in Britain and I felt sad because a real-life princess just died. My knowledge about them was really limited because I only knew them from my fairy tale books. So I guess my fascination for Princess Diane started ever since then.
My heart went out to the people, especially to her sons because they lost a great woman. I can still remember watching the footage of her funeral via cable television. The thing that touched me the most was the envelope placed with the white tulips on top of her coffin. It was a letter from Prince Harry and the word “Mummy” was written on the envelope. I felt so depressed because the Princess will never be able to read that letter.
